What is Spotify premium?

For those who aren't well informed, Spotify is the largest free streaming service available online. It's standard service (Spotify standard) is totally free to use, however you can only stream up to 4 hours a month of music. The next service is not free - Spotify unlimited. This is a small cost, and allows you to listen to as much music as you like with the desktop client. The final service is not free, called Spotify Premium. This is £5.99 a month, and allows unlimited free streaming without a premium code, and the mobile app as well.

Spotify is available on the following platforms:

- Windows - OSX - iOS - Blackberry - Android

Remember that the app is free to download on mobile devices, but if you wish to use the streaming service on mobile, you will need a Spotify premium code or account (at a cost.)

Spotify premium latest news

Spotify still remains at the top spot of music streaming in the US, and today marks the first anniversary since it broke into streaming battle across the pond. With every increasing spotify premium subscribers, and millions of free subscribers, it's still running strong. Can Apple hit Spotify off the top spot?

The Spotify for Android app has just been revamped, and will come as a much appreciated change to the green robot phone owners. Only available for premium subscribers, but as a free download, it has been updated to include queuing, and many other features that were previously available on the iPhone app. The company also seems to be turning into a great option for branding, with Spotify's integration with social media and Facebook's open graph.

New competition is entering the market, in the form of Sony Unlimited. Spotify could be knocked off the top spot as the UK's premier music streamer, especially on Sony manufactured phones. However, it doesn't appear the free and paid service is much better than Spotify, especially when comparing premium benefits.

Spotify has now launched in Australia and NZ. Now users in oceania can listen to the streaming network, either free, unlimited, or premium. This rollout now sees the music giant available in 15 countries worldwide.

A new discounted rate has been launched by Spotify, halving the price of Spotify Premium. Teaming up with NUS, Spotify have announched the £4.99 premium subscription. Users will need an NUS extra card, which is just £10 per month, and they will receive a code to get their premium cost slashed in half. If you can't justify paying premium at the price of unlimited, then you must be after something totally free. For less than a fiver per month, and the cost of £10 for an extra card, this could save you up to £40 per year, quite a saving if you'd an avid Spotify listener. Good work Spotify!

Spotify have just launched a brand new app for Android, with a complete overhaul and added functionality. Inluded functions are radio, queueing, more stability and higher streaming bit rate. Remember this app is only available free if you are a premium subscriber, or have beeen given a code.

Are people becoming to cheap for Spotify Premium? A new report shows that people are seeing even £4.99 as to much money to spend per month on unlimited music. Although streaming from spotify premium does not let you own the files, it gives free access for the subscription period to as many songs as you wish. Are we living in a money saving world? Let us know - and sign up for your free premium code today.

The growth rate for spotify premium subscribers is increasing at a phenomenal rate, with Geekwire reporting 8000 paying subscribers per day. This means that Spotify is the largest paid and free streaming service available, ahead of the likes of Grooveshark, RDO and Napster.

In a recent case, artists have been favouring spotify premium over the free subscription model, for streaming their songs. This week Adele suggested to spotify she would put her album, 21, available to stream for premium subscribers only, with no access to those with a non-paid free subscritpion. Naturally Spotify declined to honour this request, and the album remains unavailable on the streaming service.

Spotify Premium subscribers can now enjoy high quality streaming on their mobile, with the announcement that the mobile app now streams at 320kbps. What exactly does this mean for spotify users? If you're an audiophile and love high quality music, you can now take it on the go, as well as on the desktop client. Previously the bitrate was capped at 160kbps, so it's now doubled. Who can use this? If you have a free account, then you won't have access to the app, unless you get yourself a free Spotify premium code. But those with a paid subscription can go right on and update their mobile app from the app store.

A new collaboration between Spotify and Facebook means the two social platforms can connect as one. When users of either the spotify premium or the free service listen to a song on spotify, it will show on their Facebook news feed and profile, for everyone to see. This is an attempt by spotify to spread the word on the music streaming service, and increase awareness for both free and premium service. The Guardian reports all here.

One of Spotify's biggest competitors - Pandora - is certainly eating up market share in the US for music streaming. However, how will Spotify fare to this feelow music giant? It's clear that the two companies have been battling for streaming share for a few months now, but with the free and premium options available, Spotify is destined to come out on top. With nearly 3 millions Spotify premium subscribers and growing, it's a huge account code, and big business for the music industry. Now just get your hands on a free premium code and you'll be able to get a piece of the pie.

Why is Spotify premium not free?

Spotify is, after all, a business. Any business exists to make money, and there is no exception for Spotify. They have tried and tested various revenue models, including pay per stream, ad based, cost subscription based, and half subscription based. Ad revenue was reported to not be great, and mixed with the few Spotify premium subscribers, Spotify were not making money.

In 2011 Spotify launched their premium service, which although not free, was only £4.99 per month. This was considered both good value for money, and by some a bit of a rip off. The main issue revolved around the idea that the cost of 2 years Spotify Premium - whilst not free - cost around £200. And at the end of that period the user would have nothing to show for it. However, do consumers need to accept that the Spotify premium code streaming model for audio and visual content is the way forward? Netflix, Lovefilm and Grooveshark might agree with this.

Is the streaming model the way forward?

We've seen some huge changes in the music and film industry, particularly swayed by the direction in which the download/internet presence is having on unit sales. Different content distribution methods have been tried: box office, retail units, promotional DVDs, DVD rentals, pay per view, and pay per period for streaming. Let's take a look at some of the failures:

Blockbuster - Once the pinnacle of retail evening entertainment, the rental DVD model soon died out, casuing the chain to go bust.
Lovefilm - Although taken over by Amazon, the rental DVD via post model is slowing down, and users are seeking different alternatives for movies. Netflix - One of the most popular online services, breaking out into the UK market with great popularity. Pay monthly with unlimited home streaming.
You can see the direction movie viewing is going, and the results are similar in the audio world:

HMV - Once of the biggest successes of the high street, ailing sales have caused HMV to close stores across the country, and rely on other sources than CDs for their primary income stream.
Napster - Again, a success of it's time, but the buggy software and lack of catalogue caused this free and paid streaming service to fall into disrepair.
Grooveshark - Currently the largest music streaming service one earth - definitely the number one choice. Trends are clearly leaning towards a subscription based streaming model, which is exactly what Spotify Premium provides you with. But - premium code or free? The choice is up to you.

Spotify Premium vs Grooveshark

One of the best ways to decide whether or not spotify premium code is worth the money, is to compare it to the next best streaming service: Grooveshark. Both offer high quality streaming for both free and paid subscriptions, and both are available on mobile. But looking at the pros and cons of each, which one comes out trumps?
Grooveshark boasts the following:
- Unlimited size library (users can upload their own songs or media content for free, meaning the library is growing by the minute). - Advanced mobile app with next and last song queuing, offline songs, favourites, playlists and radio stations. - Great online users interfact without the need to download software. - Free song streaming on the desktop version.
But where is Grooveshark let down?
- The desktop app is flash/adobe air based, and very buggy/slow. - Some poor quality tracks are uploaded, as users can upload any song they wish. - The app is only available on iPhoen via Cydia, on jailbroken devices.
So, where does Spotify premium shine over Grooveshark?
- All tracks are in the highest streaming bitrate possible. - The company is stable, and likely to be around for years to come, unlike Grooveshark who are in legal disputes. - The app is available for free via iOS. - Free spotify premium codes can be redeemed for free access to the mobile app.
In conclusion, it's clear to see both services have their down points. But overall, unless you get Spotify for free with a premium code, it's worth paying the subscription to Grooveshark. Definitely recommended!
